Sumi X is a rising pop phenomenon that isn't afraid to take chances and bet on herself.
Born Sumi Krishnan in Pittsburgh, PA, Sumi X was raised by two determined Indian immigrant parents whose hard work inspired her – her dad running steel mills and her mom working in real estate. They taught her that dreams come true with determination and drive.
She fell in love with music at the tender age of eight years old as she watched her older sister play the flute in marching band. Eventually she would go on to play the trumpet in high school, winning the esteemed “Jazz at Lincoln Center” accolade as a senior and sharing the stage with Wynton Marsalis. She also sang vocal jazz throughout college.
Ever the high achieving go-getter, she started and scaled a 200 person IT and management services company, winning numerous awards and media recognition including Inc. Magazine’s “30 under 30” and making Inc.500’s “fastest growing companies” list year over year.
However, while all that external praise was validating, Sumi Krishnan held a secret: her heart was elsewhere, and she longed to be an artist.
She started songwriting and learning to play guitar, all while running her company. And finally, after 10 years, she decided to go for it – sold her company and moved to Nashville to”come out” as an artist.
A few months later, the global pandemic hit followed shortly by the US 2020 elections and Sumi felt the call to get active in politics and put her music on the backburner…yet again.
In the fall of 2021, she moved to LA to fully step into her artistry full time and hasn’t looked back since. She developed an artist persona, Sumi X, representing the struggles with identity she has faced her entire life. From being bullied and “othered” for being Indian American to pursuing an education and career that she wasn’t aligned with in order to meet cultural expectations, she spent much of her life trying hard to fit into a mold that wasn’t made for her.
“Because of my own journey, I’m passionate about using my voice and platform to help other ‘misfits’ find the courage and confidence to be their authentic selves in a confusing world,” Sumi explains. She reminds people to celebrate the journey of self-realization, while serving as an example that if you don't fit in, it's because you were born to stand out.
In the spring of 2023, Sumi X will release her highly anticipated first single and music video, “Electric Baby,” a passionate tune that will leave listeners intrigued and wanting more.
Sumi X is taking over the music industry one fan at a time and she's doing it her way.
